Ancient Tibetan ice may preserve a rare record of Ice Age climate

Scientists have identified ice high in Tibet that may be more than 128,000 years old. The ancient sample could provide a rare opportunity to examine atmospheric and climatic conditions from the last ice age, a period for which researchers have limited direct evidence.

Its location may also offer clues about how glaciers persist through dramatic shifts in global climate. If further analysis confirms its age and climatic record, the ice could improve understanding of both past climate change and the conditions that allow glaciers to survive warming.
