1Password Enables AI Agents to Log In Without Seeing Your Passwords
Password manager 1Password has unveiled a new feature called Agentic Mode designed to address one of the practical challenges in deploying AI agents: secure authentication.
The feature, built around an integration with Anthropic's Claude, allows AI agents to access and use stored credentials—including passwords and multi-factor authentication (MFA) codes—to log into accounts on behalf of users. Critically, the credentials themselves are never exposed to Anthropic or the AI model during this process.
How It Works
Traditional AI agents often require users to share login credentials directly with the model or service, creating potential security and privacy risks. Agentic Mode establishes a secure tunnel between 1Password and the AI agent, enabling credential autofill without allowing the model to view or retain the sensitive information.
When an agent needs to authenticate, it can request access to specific credentials from 1Password. The password manager verifies the request and populates the necessary fields—username, password, and MFA codes—without the underlying data passing through the AI system's servers or memory.
Why This Matters
As AI agents become more capable of handling complex, multi-step tasks across web applications, the ability to authenticate securely has become a significant bottleneck. Users have been forced to choose between convenience and security, often opting to share credentials with third-party services in ways that contradict best practices.
Agentic Mode aims to eliminate this trade-off by treating credential access as a privileged operation that remains under the user's control through their existing 1Password vault.
