1Password Faces Backlash Over $300,000 Linux Project Funding
1Password has found itself at the center of controversy this week following a $300,000 pledge to Omacom, the nonprofit foundation that oversees the Omarchy Linux distribution. The popular password manager was named a "distinguished corporate patron" of the project.
The backlash stems from the involvement of David Heinemeier Hansson (DHH), the creator of Omarchy, who has published blog posts containing overtly racist content, including comments calling for the deportation of ethnic minorities in Europe.
Customers quickly voiced their displeasure on social media, with some demanding alternatives to 1Password. At least one viral blog post directly accused the company of supporting what the author described as "ethnic cleansing of Europe" due to the funding association.
1Password's CEO David Faugno had appeared at the Web Summit conference in Lisbon, Portugal, just prior to the controversy surfacing.
