Black Hole Shreds 'Super Sun' in One of the Most Energetic Stellar Explosions Ever Recorded
Astronomers have witnessed one of the most energetic stellar explosions ever recorded when a black hole violently shredded a massive star, producing an event scientists have nicknamed "the Whippet."
The explosion briefly released approximately 400 billion times the Sun's energy output, with a shock wave racing outward at roughly one-fifth the speed of light. Such events, known as tidal disruption events, occur when a star ventures too close to a black hole and gets torn apart by extreme gravitational forces.
What makes this observation particularly intriguing is what followed months after the initial blast. Researchers detected unexpectedly fast-moving helium, suggesting that some dense structure from the star may have survived the violent encounter and been flung outward at high velocity.
