NYC Implements One-Year Moratorium on Student-Facing Generative AI in K-8 Schools

New York City's public school system is pausing student-facing generative AI tools for children below ninth grade. Mayor Mamdani and Chancellor Samuels announced a one-year moratorium affecting K-8 students, which the city describes as the nation's most comprehensive such restriction in schools.

The policy prohibits the use of generative AI tools by students in elementary and middle schools for the duration of the academic year. High school students remain unaffected by the restriction.

The announcement comes as educational institutions nationwide continue to grapple with how to regulate rapidly evolving AI technologies in classroom settings.
