A paper published in Nature by physicist Henry Legg of the University of St. Andrews re-analyzed Microsoft's data and argues that the company's researchers did not properly conclude their findings about the device's core technology.
Microsoft unveiled the Majorana 1 chip in February 2025, positioning it as a breakthrough featuring a new type of qubit called a topological qubit. The company claimed topological qubits would serve as the "building blocks" for future quantum computers. Notably, Microsoft followed up with the Majorana 2 chip at its Build conference earlier this month.
The critique suggests the original conclusions about the chip's fundamental technology may have been premature. Legg's peer-reviewed analysis directly challenges the claims made by Microsoft's quantum research team, highlighting concerns about how the data was interpreted.
This isn't the first time Microsoft's quantum work has faced skepticism. The company has been pursuing topological qubits for years, a technically challenging approach that promises more stable quantum operations but has proven difficult to demonstrate conclusively.
