A Private Company Takes On NASA's Next Mars Orbiter Mission

NASA has awarded a contract to a California-based private company to handle the design, build, and launch of its upcoming Mars orbiter, known as the Aeolus mission. The spacecraft is targeted for launch in 2028 and will orbit Mars to study the planet's global environment.

Unlike previous NASA Mars missions that were typically developed in-house or through established aerospace contractors, this approach delegates the entire spacecraft development to a private company. The Aeolus mission represents a notable shift in how NASA approaches planetary exploration, potentially offering more flexibility and cost efficiencies.

Once operational, the orbiter will provide daily measurements of Mars' global environment—a capability that has not been achieved before. This continuous monitoring could significantly improve our understanding of the Martian atmosphere and surface conditions over time.

The company behind the mission is based in California, a state home to many aerospace and technology firms. Notably, SpaceX was not selected for this contract, marking a departure from the more prominent names typically associated with NASA missions.
