Study Estimates One-Third of Web Pages Since ChatGPT Launch Show AI Authorship Signs

A recent study has quantified the scale of AI's infiltration into web publishing, finding that approximately one-third of web pages created since ChatGPT launched in November 2022 show detectable signs of AI authorship. The research examined newly published content across the web and used stylometric analysis and other detection methods to identify patterns consistent with large language model generation.

The findings underscore how quickly generative AI tools have become embedded in content workflows. Blog posts, product descriptions, articles, and other text-based web content are increasingly being drafted, edited, or fully produced by AI systems like ChatGPT, Gemini, and similar models. This shift has implications for web diversity, search engine optimization practices, and the broader information ecosystem.

Researchers noted that the detection of AI-authored content remains challenging as models improve, with newer systems producing text that increasingly resembles human writing. The study contributes to ongoing discussions about transparency in AI-generated content and the need for labeling standards as the line between human and machine-written text continues to blur.
