Inside Samsung's AI-Powered Semiconductor Push in South Korea

Generative AI models require powerful processors, but they also depend heavily on stacks of specialized memory chips packaged alongside the processor to function effectively. Samsung is responding to this growing demand by constructing a massive semiconductor manufacturing hub in Pyeongtaek, South Korea.

The facility represents a significant bet on the continued growth of AI infrastructure. Three fabrication plants at the complex already operate around the clock, and a fourth is in the process of coming online. The expansion reflects the broader industry push to secure chip supply chains as AI applications become more computationally demanding.

The Pyeongtaek complex is part of Samsung's strategy to cement its role as a key supplier for the AI era, providing the memory bandwidth necessary for large language models and other advanced AI systems to operate efficiently. Industry observers see the investment as a response to both competitive pressures and the structural shift in how AI workloads require different chip configurations compared to traditional computing tasks.
