Andreessen Horowitz Launches $1.1B Fund Targeting AI Hardware and Physical Infrastructure
Andreessen Horowitz, one of Silicon Valley's most prominent venture capital firms, is expanding its investment scope beyond software. The firm has announced a $1.1 billion fund dedicated to what it calls the "Machine Age," focused specifically on the physical buildout of AI infrastructure.
The initiative represents a strategic pivot for a16z, historically known for its software investments. As AI systems become increasingly computationally demanding, the underlying hardware—data centers, specialized chips, networking equipment, and physical infrastructure—has emerged as a critical bottleneck and opportunity.
The fund signals growing recognition within the venture community that the next wave of AI advancement depends not just on algorithms and models, but on the physical systems that power them. Energy capacity, cooling systems, and custom silicon have become central concerns as AI workloads scale.
While a16z has previously made hardware-related investments, this dedicated vehicle formalizes the firm's commitment to the sector. The move comes as infrastructure investments have become increasingly competitive, with hyperscalers and sovereign wealth funds also pouring capital into AI physical infrastructure projects.
