Microsoft Transfers Halo Franchise to Activision Amid Xbox Restructuring
Microsoft has announced a significant reorganization of its Xbox division, with Activision assuming control of several major franchises. The restructuring places Halo, Sea of Thieves, and Age of Empires under Activision's umbrella, fundamentally shifting how these franchises will be developed going forward.
Under the new arrangement, Halo Studios will maintain support for existing titles including Halo Infinite and Halo: Campaign Evolved. However, the next flagship installment in the Halo series will be developed by Activision rather than the dedicated Halo Studios team.
The changes come alongside workforce reductions of approximately 268 Xbox employees. Reports indicate that Ninja Theory, known for titles like Hellblade: Senua's Sacrifice, is likely to be closed as part of this restructuring. This latest round of cuts follows earlier layoffs affecting around 1,600 Xbox employees and the sale of several studios earlier this year.
The move represents Microsoft's continued integration of Activision following its $68.7 billion acquisition completed last year, with the company now centralizing certain franchise development under the newly combined entity.
