AI Analysis of Standard Mammograms May Help Identify Heart Disease Risk in Women

A new study suggests that artificial intelligence could repurpose routine mammogram images to screen for cardiovascular risk in women. Researchers trained AI models on mammograms—X-ray images of breast tissue—to identify patterns associated with heart disease, a condition that often goes undetected in women due to different symptom presentations compared to men.

The approach leverages the fact that mammograms capture tissue composition that may reflect broader cardiovascular health indicators. The AI was able to identify women at elevated risk for heart disease by analyzing existing mammogram images without requiring additional testing.

Cardiovascular disease remains the leading cause of death among women, yet traditional screening methods have historically focused more on men. This AI-driven approach could provide an opportunity for earlier intervention by flagging risk during routine breast cancer screenings women already undergo.

The findings are preliminary, and researchers note that the technology would need further validation before clinical implementation. However, the potential to combine two screenings into one visit could improve preventive care for women, particularly in populations with limited access to cardiovascular specialists.

Further studies are expected to explore how these AI predictions compare with traditional cardiovascular risk assessments and whether integrating this analysis into standard mammography workflows is feasible.
