Amazon Doubles Down on Nuclear Energy with 12-Small-Reactor Deal

Amazon is expanding its nuclear energy ambitions through a new agreement with X-energy. The tech giant will fund 12 small modular reactors (SMRs) to be built at the site of a former coal plant in Indiana, with a planned output of nearly 1 gigawatt of electricity.

This latest deal builds on an earlier partnership between the two companies announced earlier in 2026. SMRs are designed to be factory-built and modular, which could potentially reduce construction costs and timelines compared to traditional large-scale nuclear plants. Siting them at existing fossil fuel plant locations leverages existing grid infrastructure and water access, while supporting the transition away from coal-dependent communities.

The agreement represents one of the largest corporate commitments to next-generation nuclear technology to date. Amazon has previously indicated interest in nuclear power to help meet the electricity demands of its data centers and cloud infrastructure with a low-carbon source.
