Amazon to Stop Accepting New Customers for Mechanical Turk
Amazon Mechanical Turk, the crowdsourcing platform that has allowed businesses to outsource small tasks to human workers since its launch in 2005, is reportedly winding down new customer acquisitions.
The service, which pioneered the concept of microtask crowdsourcing, enabled companies to break down complex projects into small Human Intelligence Tasks (HITs) that workers could complete for small payments. It became a foundational tool for machine learning data annotation and academic research.
The shutdown of new customer signups signals what may be the final chapter for a platform that predated the current AI boom by nearly two decades. Mechanical Turk's model of connecting requesters with a global workforce of independent contractors influenced countless other platforms and freelance marketplaces that followed.
While existing customers may continue using the platform for now, the cessation of new onboarding represents a significant shift in the human computation landscape. The move comes as AI systems have increasingly automated many tasks that previously required human annotation and verification.
