AI Agent Selects and Injects a Gene Therapy in a Live Mouse

A biotech startup has demonstrated an AI agent operating in a live research setting. According to Wired, the system selected a gene therapy and successfully injected it into a live mouse’s brain.

The experiment is notable because the agent was involved in more than data analysis: it chose the treatment and carried out a physical procedure. That suggests AI systems may eventually handle combinations of scientific decision-making and laboratory automation.

At the same time, the work highlights the need for clear oversight. Giving an AI system authority over treatment selection and intervention in a living subject raises questions about how decisions should be validated, monitored, and held accountable.

Although the mouse experiment is an early glimpse rather than a general-purpose laboratory system, it points toward research environments where AI agents could help design experiments, select interventions, and execute repeatable procedures.
