Apple Unveils Simplified EU App Store Fee Structure, Resolving Regulatory Disputes
Apple is implementing significant changes to its App Store operations in the European Union, with new terms scheduled to take effect on October 1st. The company is consolidating all developers onto a single set of business terms, a move Apple says will resolve longstanding disagreements with the European Commission over business practices and alternative distribution options.
Under the new structure, apps distributed through alternative marketplaces or outside the standard App Store will face a 5% Core Technology Commission on digital transactions. For developers choosing to remain within the App Store ecosystem, the commission rates vary: 26% for apps using Apple's in-app payment system, or 20% for developers utilizing alternate payment solutions.
The changes also loosen restrictions on alternative app marketplaces, making it easier for developers to establish and operate distribution channels independent of Apple's platform. This regulatory settlement follows continued pressure from EU authorities, which have been investigating Apple's compliance with the Digital Markets Act.
