Artemis 2: Orion Spacecraft Completes Service Module Separation Test

Artemis 2 Mission Update

NASA's Artemis 2 mission has achieved another significant milestone in its preparation for the planned crewed lunar flyby. The Orion spacecraft successfully completed a separation test from its European Service Module (ESM), a critical procedure that will be used during the actual mission.

The Service Module, built by the European Space Agency (ESA), provides propulsion, power, and thermal control for Orion. During the actual Artemis 2 flight, Orion will separate from the ESM before re-entering Earth's atmosphere at the mission's conclusion.

Artemis 2 represents the first crewed mission of NASA's Artemis program, aiming to send astronauts around the Moon and back. This separation test demonstrates continued progress toward the mission's launch, building on the uncrewed Artemis 1 flight that successfully orbited the Moon in 2022.

The separation procedure is a vital safety mechanism, ensuring the crew capsule can return to Earth independently while the service module burns up in the atmosphere as planned.
