OSIRIS-REx Sample Analysis Reveals Asteroid Bennu's Fiery and Icy Origins
NASA's OSIRIS-REx mission, which successfully returned samples from asteroid Bennu in 2023, continues to yield insights into the early solar system. Scientists analyzing the collected material have discovered that Bennu's composition reflects a complex formation history involving both fiery and icy conditions.
The samples contain minerals and organic compounds that indicate Bennu formed in a region where volatile-rich materials coexisted with materials that underwent significant heating. This dual nature—often described as "born from fire and ice"—suggests the asteroid preserves material from different zones of the early solar nebula.
These findings contribute to our understanding of how asteroids form and evolve, and how they may have delivered water and organic compounds to early Earth. The OSIRIS-REx samples represent some of the most pristine asteroid material ever studied, having been collected directly from Bennu's surface without contamination from Earth's environment.
Researchers continue to analyze the returned samples at laboratories around the world, with additional findings expected to further illuminate the history of our solar system and the origins of Bennu itself.
