Australia's Aging Tech Infrastructure Faces Rising AI-Powered Cyber Threats, Signals Chief Warns
Australia's signals chief has raised alarms about the country's exposure to cyber threats stemming from aging technology infrastructure. According to reports, the Director-General of the Australian Signals Directorate (ASD) has highlighted that outdated systems across government and critical infrastructure are increasingly susceptible to attacks powered by artificial intelligence.
The warning comes as cybercriminals and state-sponsored actors rapidly adopt AI tools to enhance their capabilities. Traditional cyber defenses, which were often designed before the AI era, are struggling to keep pace with more adaptive and automated attack methods.
Experts have pointed out that legacy systems—many of which were not designed with modern security requirements in mind—lack the built-in protections needed to defend against AI-enhanced threats. These vulnerabilities are particularly concerning for essential services including power grids, water systems, and communication networks.
The ASD has reportedly been working to upgrade security measures and is encouraging organizations to accelerate their digital transformation efforts while implementing stronger cyber hygiene practices as an immediate stopgap measure.
