BepiColombo Spacecraft Prepares for Historic Mercury Arrival in 2026
BepiColombo's Long Journey to Mercury
The BepiColombo spacecraft, a joint mission by the European Space Agency (ESA) and the Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency (JAXA), is finally approaching its destination after eight years of travel. Originally launched in 2018, the spacecraft has been navigating the inner solar system, using gravitational assists from Earth and Venus to slow down and align its trajectory toward the smallest and innermost planet.
Scientific Objectives
Mercury remains one of the least explored planets in our solar system. BepiColombo carries instruments designed to study the planet's geology, magnetic field, and surface composition. Scientists hope the mission will provide insights into how Mercury formed so close to the Sun and why it possesses a magnetic field despite its small size.
What Comes Next
The spacecraft is expected to enter orbit around Mercury in 2026. Once there, it will split into two separate orbiters that will work in tandem to conduct comprehensive observations of the planet's environment and surface characteristics.
