Big Tech’s AI Infrastructure Spending Shows No Sign of Slowing

The race to build AI infrastructure is continuing at a record pace. Amazon, Microsoft, Alphabet, and Meta collectively plan to spend at least $720 billion on capital expenditures this year, with most of that funding directed toward AI infrastructure.

Those plans build on at least $1 trillion in additional spending commitments announced by the companies. The scale of the investment highlights how AI has become a central priority across Big Tech, spanning the computing infrastructure needed to train and operate AI systems.

Yet the spending has not produced the promised financial returns. Despite four quarterly earnings calls, companies continue to report that their AI infrastructure investments have not moved significantly closer to generating returns at the expected level.

The emerging conclusion is that the buildout is unlikely to slow without an external constraint. For now, Amazon, Microsoft, Alphabet, and Meta appear committed to expanding their AI infrastructure even as questions about the timing and profitability of those investments persist.
