Major Botnet Dismantled: 17 Million Devices Tied to Russia-Based Proxy Network Disconnected

Botnet Tied to Residential Proxy Network Disconnected

A significant botnet operation has been disrupted, with researchers identifying over 17 million compromised devices connected to what appears to be a Russia-based residential proxy network service.

Residential proxy networks leverage compromised home devices—including routers, IoT gadgets, and computers—to route internet traffic, making it appear as though requests originate from legitimate residential IP addresses. These services are often used to bypass geographic restrictions, evade fraud detection, or conduct other activities requiring seemingly authentic connections.

The scale of this operation highlights the ongoing challenge of securing consumer-grade devices against exploitation. Once compromised, these devices can be weaponized for various purposes, from scraping websites to launching distributed denial-of-service attacks, all while masking the true source of the traffic.

Security teams continue to advise users to regularly update firmware, change default passwords, and monitor for unusual network activity as basic precautions against such compromises.
