Newly surfaced legal documents offer a rare glimpse into how Mark Zuckerberg communicates privately versus publicly. The exhibits, released as part of ongoing litigation, include a WhatsApp conversation from 2021 when a private individual urged the Meta CEO—himself a parent—to make child safety his personal priority following whistleblower allegations about Facebook's impact on young users.
In the exchange, Zuckerberg acknowledged the concern but was candid about his focus. "I care deeply about this and we'll continue focusing on being industry-leading with young people," he responded, "but I'm not going to say it's my personal main focus when I have a number of other areas I'm more focused on like building the metaverse."
This private admission stands in contrast to public statements he posted at the time, where Zuckerberg wrote that the company cares "deeply about issues like safety, well-being and mental health" and expressed frustration at what he characterized as misrepresentation of Meta's work.
