Experimental Chewing Gum Shows Promise in Reducing HPV and Cancer-Linked Bacteria
A new therapeutic approach using specially engineered chewing gum has demonstrated significant potential in combating oral human papillomavirus (HPV) and bacteria linked to head and neck cancers, according to research findings.
The experimental gum was able to reduce HPV levels by as much as 93% in testing. Additionally, the treatment nearly eliminated two specific bacteria found in the mouth that have been associated with the development of head and neck cancers.
Notably, the approach appears to spare beneficial oral bacteria, which is an important consideration for maintaining overall oral microbiome health. Researchers suggest this targeted strategy could offer a safer and more accessible therapeutic option compared to existing treatments.
The findings represent an early but promising development in the use of a simple, low-cost delivery mechanism—chewing gum—for therapeutic purposes. Further clinical testing will be needed to confirm these results in human patients and establish long-term safety and efficacy.
