Alibaba Releases Qwen3.8-Max, Claims Performance Rivaling Top US AI Labs

Chinese tech giant Alibaba has unveiled Qwen3.8-Max, describing it as the company's largest and most capable AI model to date. In a Monday blog post, Alibaba announced the model is now widely available to users.

The company claims Qwen3.8-Max achieves performance on par with leading AI systems from US frontier laboratories including Anthropic and OpenAI, as well as domestic rivals such as Moonshot AI's Kimi K3. Alibaba previously indicated the model ranks "second only to Claude 5," referring to Anthropic's flagship system.

The open release of a highly capable Chinese AI model arrives amid ongoing tensions between Silicon Valley and Washington over AI development and deployment. Industry observers note this release further intensifies global competition in frontier AI capabilities.

Alibaba previewed the model last month before Monday's broader launch, marking another step in the company's push to establish itself as a leading AI developer alongside American counterparts.
