China's Tianwen-2 Spacecraft En Route to Collect Asteroid Sample
China has launched its Tianwen-2 spacecraft on a mission to collect samples from an asteroid—marking the nation's first attempt at asteroid sample return.
The Tianwen-2 mission represents an important step in China's growing interplanetary exploration capabilities. While previous Chinese space missions have successfully returned samples from the Moon, this will be the country's first retrieval of material from an asteroid.
Asteroid sample return missions are scientifically valuable because they allow researchers to study pristine extraterrestrial material that has remained largely unchanged since the early solar system. These samples can provide insights into the formation of planets, the origins of water and organic compounds, and the composition of asteroids.
The Tianwen-2 spacecraft will approach and land on the target asteroid, collecting surface material before beginning its return journey to Earth. The mission builds on techniques China developed during its successful Chang'e lunar sample return missions.
