Comcast Announces Plan to Split Into Two Separate Companies
Comcast has announced plans to split itself into two publicly traded companies, separating its profitable broadband and wireless business from its media and entertainment operations.
Under the restructuring, the cable and internet provider will retain the "Comcast" name, while the media and entertainment division—including NBCUniversal and Sky—will become a separate company. The move is designed to protect Comcast's profitable broadband and wireless brand as the media business faces increasing pressure from industry consolidation and streaming competitors.
The separation is expected to take approximately one year to complete. Upon closing, current Comcast shareholders will receive shares in both companies.
The restructuring reflects the ongoing divergence between stable, subscription-based internet services and the more volatile media and entertainment sector, which has been forced to adapt to shifting viewer habits and intensifying competition from streaming platforms.
