id Software Reportedly Cutting Roughly Half Its Workforce
id Software, the studio best known for the iconic Doom franchise, is reportedly reducing its workforce by roughly half, according to multiple sources familiar with the matter.
The layoffs at the Texas-based developer come amid broader organizational changes at Microsoft following its acquisition of Bethesda and subsequent integration of ZeniMax Media. id Software has been under the Microsoft/Xbox umbrella since 2021.
Details about which teams or specific roles are affected remain limited. Microsoft has not publicly commented on the reported cuts.
The studio, which traces its roots back to 1991, has been responsible for some of the most influential first-person shooters in gaming history, including the original Doom (1993), Quake, and more recent entries in the Doom franchise under Bethesda's publishing.
This workforce reduction adds to a pattern of layoffs that have swept through the video game industry over the past year, affecting studios across the sector as companies look to cut costs following a period of aggressive expansion.
