EU AI Act Transparency Rules Now in Effect

The European Union has activated additional rules under its landmark AI Act aimed at helping people identify chatbots and AI-generated deepfakes online. The transparency obligations, which came into force on August 2nd, require companies to disclose when users are interacting with AI systems and when content has been generated or altered by AI.

The rules distinguish between providers—companies that develop and market AI systems—and deployers, which are platforms and services that implement those systems. Some large companies, such as Meta and SpaceXAI, fall into both categories simultaneously.

For providers, the requirements include designing AI systems to explicitly inform users that they are interacting with an AI model. Deployers must similarly ensure that AI-generated or AI-modified content is clearly labeled when presented to users.

The implementation marks the latest phase of the EU's comprehensive approach to regulating artificial intelligence, building on foundational risk-based classifications introduced earlier in the legislation's rollout.
