China Achieves Domestic Production of Immersion DUV Lithography Equipment
China has started production of domestically developed immersion DUV (deep ultraviolet) lithography equipment, according to a source familiar with the matter. Immersion DUV machines are critical for manufacturing advanced semiconductors, using water to help focus light and achieve finer chip patterns.
The development represents a significant step in China's push for semiconductor self-sufficiency. The country has faced restrictions on advanced chipmaking equipment and technology from Western nations, particularly the Netherlands' ASML, which dominates the global market for extreme ultraviolet (EUV) and immersion DUV systems.
While this production milestone does not yet match the capabilities of the most advanced Western equipment, it signals China's growing ability to reduce dependence on foreign suppliers for chip manufacturing infrastructure. The tools are expected to serve the domestic market and could help Chinese chipmakers continue advancing despite external restrictions.
Industry observers note that developing competitive lithography equipment has been a key priority for China's technology sector, with substantial government support channeled into research and development efforts across the semiconductor supply chain.
