Long-Term Study Links Excess Body Weight With Faster Brain Aging
A long-term study involving more than 8,200 adults suggests that excess body weight may be associated with faster brain aging over time. Researchers tracked changes in memory, concentration, and decision-making skills across 24 years and found that participants with greater body weight generally experienced steeper cognitive declines.
The relationship was particularly strong among adults over the age of 65, highlighting the potential long-term implications of excess weight for brain health as people age. Because the study reports an association, it does not show that excess body weight directly causes faster cognitive decline; other factors may also contribute to the observed relationship.
