FDA Clears AI Tool for Pulmonary Hypertension Detection via Standard ECGs

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration has granted clearance to an artificial intelligence software designed to identify signs of untreated pulmonary hypertension using signals from standard 12-lead ECGs—a diagnostic test commonly available in clinical settings.

Pulmonary hypertension is a condition characterized by high blood pressure in the arteries supplying the lungs, which can lead to heart failure if left untreated. Early detection is often challenging because symptoms such as shortness of breath and fatigue can overlap with other conditions.

The newly cleared AI system analyzes electrical patterns captured during a routine 12-lead ECG, which already serves as a fundamental tool in cardiology. By identifying subtle markers within this widely used test, the software may help clinicians flag patients who could benefit from further evaluation without requiring additional specialized equipment or procedures.

The clearance marks another step in the integration of AI-based tools into routine cardiovascular diagnostics, where machine learning models are increasingly being applied to interpret standard medical data.
