NHTSA proposes cyan lights to identify driverless vehicles

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has proposed changes to Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard No. 108 that would update the rules for autonomous vehicles.

A central element of the proposal is the use of cyan-colored marker lamps to clearly and consistently communicate that a vehicle is operating without a human driver. The agency is also considering changes that would reduce regulatory burdens for designs without a human at the wheel.

The proposal comes after years of debate over how robotaxis should signal their status to pedestrians, other road users, and law enforcement. If adopted, the standardized cyan lighting would provide a common visual indicator for driverless vehicles.
