Google Restricts Free Gemini Access to Flash Lite Only Starting October

Google is implementing significant restrictions on free access to its Gemini AI models. Starting October 9th, users on the free tier will be limited exclusively to Gemini Flash Lite, losing the ability to choose between Flash Lite, Flash, and Pro models as they can currently.

Under the new structure, users wanting the standard Flash model will need to subscribe to Google's AI Plus plan at $4.99 per month. However, even that subscription tier is receiving a downgrade—it will no longer include access to the Gemini Pro model. Google has stated that AI Plus subscribers will receive email notifications regarding when their Pro access will be revoked.

The most capable models, including Gemini Pro and the "Deep Think" advanced reasoning option, will be restricted to higher-tier subscriptions: Google AI Pro or Ultra. This move represents a notable shift in Google's approach to democratizing AI access, consolidating premium capabilities behind paid tiers while limiting free users to the most basic offering.
