Demis Hassabis Transitions to Chief Scientist as Google Reshapes DeepMind Leadership

Google is restructuring the leadership of its artificial intelligence division. Demis Hassabis, who has led Google DeepMind since the unit was formed, will transition from his role as CEO to become chair of Google DeepMind and chief scientist at Alphabet.

The move marks a notable shift for the co-founder of the AI research lab that Google acquired in 2014. Hassabis will retain his position as CEO of Isomorphic Labs, Alphabet's drug discovery company that applies AI to pharmaceutical research.

Taking over day-to-day operations is Koray Kavukcuoglu, previously DeepMind's chief technology officer. He assumes the title of senior vice president of DeepMind and will report directly to Google CEO Sundar Pichai. Kavukcuoglu will also continue serving as Google's chief AI architect.

The leadership change comes amid reports of ongoing departures of senior research talent from the AI unit, a pattern some observers have characterized as a "brain drain" for the organization. The restructuring reflects Google's effort to consolidate its AI strategy under new operational leadership while maintaining Hassabis's strategic expertise across Alphabet's broader AI ambitions.
