Google Maps Renames Lake Ontario to 'Lake America' Following Executive Order
Google Maps has updated its platform to reflect 'Lake America' in place of Lake Ontario, marking the first major online maps provider to implement the name change mandated by a recent executive order.
The change affects one of North America's Great Lakes, which forms part of the border between the United States and Canada. While Google has made the update, it remains to be seen whether other major mapping services will follow suit.
The executive order directing federal agencies to use 'Gulf of America' instead of 'Gulf of Mexico' has also extended to include the renaming of Lake Ontario, despite its location spanning both U.S. and Canadian territory. This cross-border nature of the lake may present diplomatic considerations, as Canada was not party to the executive order.
