UK Regulators Require Google to Let Publishers Opt Out of AI Search Features

The UK's Competition and Markets Authority (CMA) has issued a landmark ruling requiring Google to give online publishers more control over how their content appears in AI-powered search features.

Under the new conduct rule, Google must:

  • Allow website owners to opt out of AI Search features such as AI Overviews
  • Prevent publisher content from being used for the "fine-tuning" of Google's AI models

The CMA described this as "a world first," noting that it will give publishers—including news organizations—a stronger position when negotiating with Google over how their content is used.

The ruling addresses growing concerns from publishers who have found their articles automatically summarized by Google's AI features without clear mechanisms to object or prevent such use. By requiring Google to provide opt-out tools, the CMA aims to restore some balance in the relationship between search platforms and content creators.

This development comes as regulators worldwide grapple with how to apply existing competition and intellectual property frameworks to the rapidly evolving AI landscape.
