Google Tests Publisher Payments for AI Search Content Contributions

Google has launched a pilot program that pays publishers for their contributions to the company's AI-powered search features, according to multiple reports. The program began less than a year ago and involves approximately 100 participating publishers.

Under the pilot, Google compensates publishers based on how substantially their content contributes to AI Overviews, AI Mode in Search, and responses from the Gemini chatbot. Early participants have reportedly seen notable payments—one publisher that joined when the program first launched earned over $1 million.

The initiative comes as Google faces ongoing scrutiny from publishers who have raised concerns about declining web traffic as AI-generated summaries increasingly display content directly in search results. By establishing a payment structure tied to content contribution, Google appears to be seeking ways to maintain publisher relationships while continuing to expand its AI search capabilities.
