Google DeepMind CEO Calls for US-Led Global AI Watchdog
Demis Hassabis, CEO and cofounder of Google DeepMind, is calling for the establishment of a global AI watchdog that could impose restrictions on frontier AI development if models become too dangerous.
Speaking at the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland, and expanding on the idea in a blog post, Hassabis argued that the US is best positioned to lead such an initiative given "its economic and technical standing." The proposed regulatory body would resemble existing models like the Financial Industry Regulatory Authority (FINRA) and would be composed of leading independent experts alongside representatives from open-source communities.
The watchdog would have the authority to evaluate frontier AI models before their public release and coordinate international responses to potential risks. This comes as AI capabilities continue to advance rapidly, raising concerns among industry leaders about the need for coordinated oversight of the most powerful AI systems.
Hassabis's proposal reflects growing discussions within the AI industry about governance frameworks that balance innovation with safety considerations.
