Google Sues Chinese Cybercrime Group Over AI-Generated SMS Scam Operation

Google has filed a lawsuit against a Chinese cybercrime operation called "Outsider Enterprise" for allegedly using artificial intelligence to power a large-scale SMS phishing campaign.

According to the complaint, the group operated a sophisticated scam network that generated and sent approximately 2.5 million fraudulent text messages within a two-week period. The messages targeted hundreds of thousands of potential victims, making it one of the more significant AI-assisted fraud operations documented in recent years.

The lawsuit, filed in a U.S. federal court, seeks to hold the defendants accountable for violations of computer fraud laws and consumer protection statutes. Google is also pursuing injunctive relief to prevent the operation from continuing and is seeking damages for the harm caused to users.

This case highlights the growing concern among technology companies and law enforcement agencies about the use of AI tools by cybercriminals to scale fraudulent schemes. Automated systems powered by AI allow bad actors to generate convincing phishing content at volume and target victims with minimal manual effort.

Google urged users to remain vigilant about unsolicited text messages and to avoid clicking on links from unknown senders.
