Google Commits $15 Billion to Finnish AI Infrastructure, Secures Nuclear Power
Google is making a substantial commitment to Finland's digital infrastructure with a planned $15 billion investment in AI-related data centers and supporting systems. The investment, announced in September 2026, will expand Google's existing Finnish operations, which serve as a key hub for the company's European cloud services.
A notable component of the strategy involves Google securing nuclear power supplies for the new facilities. Data centers are extremely power-intensive, and access to reliable, low-carbon energy sources has become a critical consideration for technology companies expanding their computational infrastructure. Finland's existing nuclear power capabilities and cold climate make it an attractive location for such facilities.
The investment represents one of the larger single-country infrastructure commitments by a major technology firm in Europe. Finland has been cultivating its role as a data center hub due to its stable regulatory environment, renewable energy resources, and proximity to Northern European markets.
The expansion will support Google's AI model training and deployment operations, as well as cloud services for enterprise customers in the region.
