Google Opens Google Home to Third-Party AI Agents via Model Context Protocol
Google is introducing a new integration that opens its smart home platform to third-party AI agents. The company announced Google Home MCP, which uses the Model Context Protocol (MCP) to let AI agents securely access and control devices within the Google Home ecosystem.
The integration allows agents including Claude, Open Claw, Google Antigravity, and Hermes to not only control smart home devices but also analyze a user's home data and act on their behalf. According to Taylor Lehman, group product manager at Google Home & Nest, Home MCP "allows any AI agents that support MCP to securely work with all of the devices and event history in your Google Home ecosystem."
The Model Context Protocol serves as a standardized bridge between AI agents and smart home systems, potentially simplifying development for developers who want to build cross-platform smart home capabilities. This move positions Google Home as a more open platform while maintaining secure access controls for user data and connected devices.
