Hacker leaks data on more than 41,000 Homeland Security personnel
A hacktivist group has leaked a trove of Department of Homeland Security personnel data stolen through the agency’s use of Okta, an identity and access management service. The records cover more than 41,000 employees, including approximately 21,000 associated with Customs and Border Protection, as well as personnel from U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement.
The exposed information includes names, job titles, phone numbers, email addresses and office locations. The dataset also linked the agencies to particular surveillance tools. The material was subsequently published online, raising concerns about the exposure and potential targeting of affected employees.
The incident highlights the security implications of storing detailed workforce and operational information within third-party identity systems. It also demonstrates that access to a technology provider can provide a route to sensitive government data across multiple agencies.
