Discovery of Master Stem Cell May Explain Spinal Stenosis Development

A newly identified stem cell could hold the key to understanding why some people develop lumbar spinal stenosis, a condition that causes pain, numbness, and difficulty walking when spinal nerves become compressed.

Scientists discovered that this stem cell acts as a master source for tendon and ligament cells throughout the body. In patients with lumbar spinal stenosis, these cells become unusually active, potentially driving excessive ligament growth that narrows the spinal canal and squeezes nearby nerves.

The research team found that reducing calcium signaling in these stem cells stopped the abnormal growth in mouse models. This suggests a potential avenue for developing treatments that could prevent or reduce the ligament overgrowth responsible for spinal stenosis symptoms.

The findings offer new insight into the cellular mechanisms underlying this common spinal condition, which affects millions of people worldwide and is a frequent cause of lower back and leg pain, particularly in older adults.
