Surgeons Remotely Control Humanoid Robots in World-First Live Pig Surgery
A team of researchers has successfully completed what they are calling a world-first demonstration: using humanoid robots controlled by human surgeons to perform an operation on live pigs.
The preclinical trial was designed to test whether humanoid robots—machines with body forms similar to humans—could serve as viable platforms for remote surgical procedures. Surgeons controlled the robots remotely, guiding their movements to complete the operation on the live subjects.
While the study is early-stage, researchers say the trial demonstrates the potential for humanoid robots to extend surgical expertise across distances, potentially allowing specialized surgeons to assist or perform procedures in locations where they cannot be physically present.
Further development and additional trials will be needed to refine the technology and establish safety and efficacy standards before any broader clinical application could be considered.
