AI Tools Hide Features for Creating Violent Synthetic Images and Video
An investigation by WIRED identified roughly 400 apps and websites linked to Chinese-language developers that appeared to be conventional AI tools. However, the products included undisclosed features that enabled users to create violent AI-generated images and video.
The findings illustrate a potential gap between how AI products present themselves and the capabilities they contain. Users viewing an app as a routine creative tool may not expect it to include hidden functions for producing violent synthetic media.
The investigation also shows how harmful AI features can be embedded across otherwise mundane services. Because these capabilities were not obvious from the tools’ apparent purpose, users could create violent images and video without deliberately seeking a specialized deepfake platform.
