IceCube Detects Cosmic Neutrinos with Extraordinary Energy

Neutrinos are constantly streaming through Earth and human bodies, but they are exceptionally difficult to detect. The IceCube observatory, a massive particle detector buried in Antarctic ice, has now recorded neutrinos with energies around 10 billion times greater than those of solar neutrinos.

The detections are significant because these unusually powerful particles may have traveled from distant cosmic sources. Studying them could give scientists new ways to investigate the Big Bang, extreme events in the cosmos, and other unresolved questions about the universe.

IceCube's ability to observe such rare arrivals provides a means of studying the most energetic processes in space by detecting particles that pass largely undetected through ordinary matter.
