India Introduces Merchant Fee on Larger UPI Transactions
India's Unified Payments Interface (UPI), one of the world's most widely adopted digital payments systems, will introduce a 0.4% merchant fee on certain transactions beginning October 15. The change targets larger transactions and represents the first time India has imposed such charges on the UPI network, which has historically offered free transfers to encourage digital adoption.
The fee applies specifically to merchant transactions above a certain threshold, while person-to-person transfers are expected to remain unaffected. The government has framed the measure as a way to ensure the long-term sustainability of the digital payments ecosystem, which has grown to process billions of transactions monthly since its launch.
UPI has become integral to India's digital economy, enabling seamless fund transfers between bank accounts via mobile devices. The platform's widespread adoption was driven partly by the convenience and zero-cost structure for users. Industry observers will be watching how merchants and consumers respond to the new fee structure as it takes effect.
