Unacademy Acquired by upGrad for $206M as Edtech Valuations Continue to Normalize
India's Unacademy, a prominent online learning platform, has been acquired by rival upGrad for approximately $206 million—a steep drop from the company's $3.4 billion valuation during its peak funding rounds.
Unacademy co-founder and CEO Gaurav Munjal acknowledged the significant decline candidly. "We raised at a peak, but sold at a fraction of that," Munjal wrote. "I'm not going to dress these facts up."
The acquisition comes as India's edtech sector has faced a challenging environment following the post-pandemic pullback in demand for online learning services. Unacademy, which raised over $850 million across multiple funding rounds, joins a list of high-profile startups experiencing valuation resets as investors reassess growth expectations.
The combined entity is expected to strengthen upGrad's position in India's competitive online education market, which has seen consolidation as companies seek to achieve profitability amid uncertain funding conditions.
The deal underscores a broader trend in the startup ecosystem where companies that raised at frothy valuations during the 2020-2021 boom are now facing reality checks in exit valuations and M&A transactions.
