iOS 27 Beta Reveals Potential "Restricted Mode" for Financed iPhones
Apple appears to be building enforcement mechanisms into iOS 27 that could restrict app access on financed iPhones when users miss payments.
According to findings reported by 9to5Mac, code in the iOS 27 beta includes a "Restricted Mode" that would be triggered if the system detects missed payments on a financed device. Under this mode, users would lose access to nearly all apps, retaining only basic functionality through apps like Phone, Settings, and the App Store.
The system leverages a new "App Managed Features" framework, which allows financing or partner apps to continuously check whether a financed device is in good standing with its payment plan.
This discovery follows reports from Bloomberg earlier this week indicating that Apple is preparing to launch a new "Apple Upgrade" financing program, potentially competing with existing lease-to-own models for iPhones.
While the code has been found in the beta, it remains unclear whether Apple intends to deploy the feature broadly or how it might be implemented in practice.
